Freedom
Freedom is a paradoxical and abstruse phenomenon
It is complex and holds many a shape,
Therefore, we must first establish what it is not
In a country such as the United States,
it is clear that freedom and equality are not for all
These concepts have created division
A separation between the they and otherwise
They ask why does it always have to be white privilege and black
oppresion with you, n*ggers?
Don’t you know that ALL of that has been put behind us.
You’re no longer picking cotton and getting raped, slashed and burned.
You oughta be more grateful.
They ask why must you speak in that language, poor immigrant?
Don’t you know that you’re in America now!
Speak my tongue.
You want to be a citizen of MY country, utter my words.
You have come here for the American Dream?
I scoff as you will never achieve such a phenomenon for as long as you are
under my thumb.
They ask why must you rub your immoral sexuality upon our faces, you
f**gots?
Do you not have any shame in your ways?
Love? What do you know of love, but sodomy?
God will punish you for this.
Just you wait!
They ask again why does it always have to be a woman’ s equality vs. men’ s
superiority for you, b*tches?
Don’t you know that I worked diligently to be put above you.
Don’t you understand that I have to support you when you bear my
children from your womb.
Don’t you know that Adam cam before Eve and she was birthed from
his rib.
Don’t you know!
But what is a man without a woman?
A bag of bones rubbing together with each step
I answer, change.
Change in the standards of freedom and those who are able to achieve it
Why do you white male chauvinist-supremacists not see that we need
change?
This life can be no more for those who live in this country.
The underpaid, jailed, and discriminated can be no longer.
We’ ve lied in wait for too long.
My life.
The life of my black friends, family and associates.
The life of our female successors.
The life of the next gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered male or
female person
That feels they are worth nothing because of their love for someone else.
That’s what matters.
Yes, all of our freedoms matter, but the freedom of Black and Brown
men and women has been negated for far too long
We have been desensitized to their violence
Numb, unfeeling, traumatized
But also disturbed
We will all have to pay if we live in the silence that rings in the ears of all
of us.
Your brothers and sisters die in front of your eyes
You cry silently for them
Let me tell you that you have killed them also with your silence.
You have given up their freedoms willingly, graciously
You have shot them in their hearts as they put their hands up and
scream, “I am unarmed!”
Your complacency is deadlier than his weapon will ever be.
I say this to you today, because there is a lot of complacency,
A lot of denial,
Even further, a lot of polarization in politics.
I refuse to stand for it any longer.
I refuse to remain stagnant
Watching my fellow men and women be killed by a system that is
supposed to protect them
Protect their freedoms to just be
Yet rather, it oppresses their wills to live in the land of the free.
There is only so much that one can take of this.
There is only so much.
Society is in desperate need of a change.
The first step is creating that movement.
Inertia.
No longer can our words move us forward, but actions
A push or a shove in the right direction can make anything worth
happening… happen.
But what must this push, or shove be?
The need for equality and thus freedom socially is not just a desire
Our justice system has become a mockery of our Constitution
Our Constitution has been taken out of context by those who deify it
The tendacy to forget the true definition of freedom rings true among
us
Freedom is the right to speak freely
Freedom is the ability to establish your own way of living within the
moral compass of democracy
Freedom was built upon the backs of ancestors of black, brown, and
yellow brothers and sisters alike.
Freedom is an inextricable human right
A force unseen, unbeknownst to the human eye,
It breathes air into the lungs of the downtrodden
To love oneself is to love freedom
And I do love both
